Since June 2017, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has been funding the research group "Space-Time Dynamics of Extreme Floods" (SPATE). SPATE is a consortium of seven universities and research institutions that jointly research the causes and effects of extreme floods in Germany and Austria. The spokesperson of the research group is Prof. Andreas Schumann from the Ruhr University Bochum. The Chair of Hydrology, Water Management and Environmental Engineering is responsible for subproject 1, headed by Dr. Svenja Fischer, and for coordination.
At the end of 2019, the funding period of the research group was extended for another three years.
Due to their high damage potential, floods are of great importance for society. The origins and governing processes of extreme floods are not very well known so far, but new, temporally and spatially high-resolution data and new approaches to quantifying interactions in the context of coordinated research now promise a major breakthrough. The goal of this research group is to understand the atmospheric, catchment and river system processes and their interactions that lead to extreme flood events in a spatially and temporally coherent manner. Through interdisciplinary cooperation between the disciplines of hydrology, mathematics, meteorology and hydraulic engineering, these questions are answered.
Prof. Andreas Schumann has held the Chair of Hydrology, Water Management and Environmental Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum since 2002. He has been the spokesperson for the SPATE research group since 2013. Prof. Schumann studied hydrology at the TU Dresden and received his doctorate there in 1981. In 1993 he habilitated at the RUB under Prof. Gert Schultz.
